elected member. First joined the Radical Party in 1983, author of a video on the history of the Radical Party. He is a collaborator of the radical representatives at the European Parliament. He participated in the last European elections on the lay federation ticket in Italy thanks to a bill proposed by the Radical representatives in Parliament which gives the right to passive electorate also to non-Italian citizens of the EEC.

Olivier DUPUIS

member by right. Total conscientious assertor-objector, he surrendered himself to the Belgian justice system in October 1985 and served an 11-month sentence in the prison of Saint Gilles. In charge of the French-speaking edition of Radical News. Organized and participated in several nonviolent demonstrations in the countries of Eastern Europe, and for such initiatives was expelled from Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. Currently coordinates the transnational Radical party's activities in Rumania and Hungary and works at the radical Project "The New Party".

Arrested and expelled from Poland and Czechoslovakia in '88 following the demonstrations which took place respectively in '86 and in '88. Actively involved in the antiprohibitionist campaign, organized the conventions of the Cora (Radical Anti-prohibitionist Coordination) in Brussels in '88 and '91.

Marco PANNELLA

president of the Federal Council. Member of the European Parliament, Non-members group, elected on the "Liberali Repubblicani federalisti" ticket. Among the founders of the Radical Party.

At twenty he was national university leader of the Liberal Party, at twenty two President of the UGI, the union of all lay student forces, at 23 president of the national union of university students (UNURI). At 24 promoted the foundation of the Radical Party together with a prestigious group of democratic, liberal and socialist intellectuals and politicians. The Radical Party began its activity in 1956; Pannella, with the exception of a few years, from 1960 to 1963, when he works in Paris as correspondent for "Il Giorno" is at once one of the most active militants of the party. Among the founders of the League for the Institution of Divorce, Conscientious Objection, the abrogation of the Concordat wanted by the fascist regime between Church and State, of the Centre of juridical initiative "Piero Calamandrei", of the AIED (association for population control) he was in the forefront to promote the reforms, which were then obtained, of the legislation on drugs, of the electoral vote (granting the right to vote

to eighteen year-olds), of the laws on mental hospitals.

Active in the safeguard of human and civil rights, already in 1968 he was arrested in Sofia, after having organized, in other cities of the Warsaw Pact, demonstrations in defence of the Czech people and its "Spring".

Among the first to organize the green and environmentalist movements in Europe, he was very active in the moralization of public life, against the allotment of public funds to political parties, against the corruption of party power; with the Radical Party he organized at least twenty campaigns for the collection of referendums on all the subjects of social and political life, in particular those relative to the rule of law and the administration of the justice system.

For his nonviolent battles he was tried and arrested hundreds of times, but was always acquitted, except in the case of a pecuniary penalty for a press offence. He was elected several times local councillor in Rome, Naples, Trieste, regional councillor in the Abruzzi and at the Chamber of Deputies, twice at the Senate, three times at the European Parliament.

He carried out several hunger and thirst strikes not only in Italy, but everywhere in Europe, to obtain new laws for civil and human rights and against world hunger.

Author of the text of the Manifesto-Appeal of Nobel Prizes against world hunger, which is now signed by one hundred Nobel Prize winners, of the resolution passed by the European Parliament on 30 September 1981, which lead to the passage of new laws in Italy and Belgium against world hunger.

In January 1987 ran for President of the European Parliament, obtaining 61 votes.

Antonio STANGO

member by right; former member of the Negri secretariat. Sergio STANZANI

engineer, Central Director of the Finmeccanica (IRI group) in 1979, when he was elected at the Senate of the Republic. Among the founders of the Radical Party. Since 1946 he is part of the leadership of the Italian Students Union (UGI), the organization of lay university students which was formed after World War II and which gave birth, together with the organizations of Catholic students and other minor associations, to the representations of university students on a local and national scale; the UNURI, which he was president of in 1952 and 1953.

Member of the Italian Liberal Party, he leaves it to give birth to the Radical Party. With the radical Left he participated in the Radical Party's refoundation, coordinating the development of the news Statute. Elected at the Senate in 1979, he is re-elected at the Chamber of Deputies in 1983 and confirmed at the Chamber in the elections of June 1987. During the tenth Parliament he was member, for about a year, of the Office of the Presidency of the Chamber. During the previous Parliaments he had been a member, among others, of the Committee of Inquiry first and then of the Committee of Inspection on Radio and TV services.

Lorenzo STRIK LIEVERS

former member of the Senate, Environmentalist European Federalist Group. Professor of contemporary history at the University of Milan. Among the promoters of the reconstitution of the Radical Party. In 1966 he was arrested for having circulated an antimilitarist fly sheet during the celebration of the armed forces. Emilio VESCE

member by right. On 7 April 1979 he is arrested, charged with belonging to an armed group, subversive association and armed insurrection against the powers of the State. Sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment, he was later acquitted after spending five years, five months and five days in special prisons. In 1987 he was elected member of Parliament on the radical ticket. Currently antiprohibitionist councillor in Veneto.
