Integrating Methadone Patients into Traditional Alcohol Treatment
Programs
Steven Kipnis, MD, FACP, and Richard Gelb, MA, describe the effective inclusion of methadone patients in traditional alcohol/chemical dependency treatment. Kipnis, Medical Director of the Blaisdell Alcohol Rehabilitation Center and Addiction Service at Nyack Hospital, and Gelb, Director of the Nyack Hospital Recovery Center, highlight the need for a shift in treatment philosophy from abstinence to harm reduction.

Codeine, Methadone, and Heroin: An Update on Opiate Maintenance
Programs in Europe
Michael Krausz, MD, Ph.D., head of research at the psychiatric clinic of the Eppendorf University Hospital in Hamburg, presents the results of two major prospective studies on methadone and codeine maintenance treatment in Germany. Krausz, Editor-in-Chief of European Addiction Research, also reports on European heroin prescription projects based on his experience as a member of the international expert boards.

Reaching Out to Crack Cocaine Users
Mark Kinzly, needle exchange coordinator for the City of Bridgeport
Department of Health, examines evolving efforts to provide harm
reduction services for users of crack cocaine. Kinzly, a founding
member of People of Color Harm Reduction Community Partnership,
details emerging trends among some users to inject crack cocaine.

Legal Strategies to Improve Syringe Availability
Hon. Lawrence Gostin, J.D., LL.D., and Scott Burris, J.D., analyze
strategies for improving access to drug injection equipment to reduce transmission of HIV/AIDS, including syringe exchange programs and deregulation of syringe sales. Gostin, Professor of Law and Co-Director at Georgetown/Johns Hopkins Program on Law and Public Health, and author of Human Rights and Public Health in the AIDS Pandemic (Oxford University Press, 1997), examines the legal and public health implications of restricting access to syringes and discusses his CDC/Carter Presidential report on injection drug users and HIV. Burris, Associate Professor of Law at Temple Law School and a lawyer for exchangers, assesses local law as a means of protecting syringe exchange programs and for furthering political change at the state and national levels.

Crack in America: Demon Drugs and Social Justice
Harry Levine, Ph.D., professor of sociology at Queens College, City University of New York, and Craig Reinarman, Ph.D., professor of sociology at University of California, Santa Cruz, discuss their book Crack in America (University of California Press, 1997).
