Dear Mr. Cappato,
Thanks for your very interesting mail. The possibility to cooperate with
CORA and the Transnational Radical Party in the organisation of an international
event is very inspiring indeed. Of course we are well acquainted with CORA
through the reports that some of our members send in on our mailing lists.
As you may know the Legalize! Initiative is setting up groups around the
world with the aim of organising simultaneous manifestations for drug
law reform. We've recently organised the 'First Global Anti-Prohibition Day'
which was held on on June 15 on the occasion of the Amsterdam Euro Summit,
with events in Amsterdam, San Francisco, Norwich and Tallinn.
The Legalize! Initiative (or 'Legalize!' in brief) is an internet-based
action forum, with members in many nations, which was set up this spring.
Although the 'netted' members are not yet many (just over 500) we have a
lot of dedicated contacts 'on the ground', many of whom have helped organise
the First Global Anti-Prohibition Day. At the moment Legalize! has no formal
organisation. This is left to the national chapters. For example,
Legalize!-Nederland will be a acquire legal status in the very near future.
We are convinced that by co-operation, effectiveness of manifestations can
be greatly increased, e.g. in terms of media attention. Although with 500
participants it was a relatively small manifestation, the San Francisco Drug
Peace Rally, as part of the First Global Anti-Prohibition Day, was featured on
CNN. In the Netherlands, the Amsterdam Street Party against the War on Drugs,
with 2000 participants, was reported on national prime time news.
Of course, many other groups have held manifestations this summer as well.
Largely by coincidence, the weekend of 23 August major events were held in
Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Berlin. With just a little planning
this could have been declared a global event, which would have much improved
media attention.
We are convinced that, if we are able to have a sufficiently large number of
groups participate in next summer's event, media coverage will be extensive.
We'd very much like to discuss possibilities for co-ordinated planning with
your organisation. We've already contacted other groups, such as HanfNet, the
organisers of this year's Berlin HanfParade, and the November Coalition. Our
personal contacts include the DRCNet staff, who have stated their intention to
help out. Several well-known American reformers have contributed to the San
Francisco event.
We have forwarded your proposal to choose June 8 as the date for the 2nd 'GAP'
event to several of our co-ordinators, and are convinced that reactions will
be positive. We'll of course notify you as soon as possible.
In the mean time, we would propose the following:
- We should ask DRCNet to support us and help spread the word.
We have already notified them, and are waiting for a response.
- We should probably write a joint proposal, asking other organisations
to help and have CORA, DRCNet, Legalize! and other organisations co-sign it.
- We should then send it to all organisations we can think of.
Hoping to hear from you soon,
best regards,
Harry Bego, Utrecht, The Netherlands
