Poster campaigns, arrests & trials in Eastern Tibet

Lhasa, July 9. Radio Lhasa announced that five Tibetans named Chimi Dorje, Lobsang Khyi-kyag, PemaTsering (for 15 years) and Lobsang Palden, Jampa Tashi (for 12 years) imprisonment each, with deprivation of political rights for 5 yrs and 4 yrs respectively. The TV broadcast announced that the five were tried at Pashoe (Baxoi) in Chamdo (Qamdo) convicted for counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement. The five had put up posters calling for Tibetan Independence and on Mar 29, 94 broke the nameplate of a Communist Party building. The Broadcast reportedly described the verdict as a "signal to anyone who would undermine Tibet's stability or its allegiance to Beijing". The same court sentenced Mr. Aten to death, allegedly for murder.

This is the first known media broadcast of death sentence in the chinese demarcated TAR since Feb. 1991.Following posters and leaflet campaigns in Chamdo and Kham, 8 tibetans were arrested from Chamdo town and Tsawa Bomo township. On Feb 9, during an important regional religious festival in Dayab (Chayab), amidst posters on walls of offices and residences and streets, six monks of Bhu Gon monastery, one of the two largest in Dayab county, were arrested.
