Paris, September 13. VOA's Sonja Pace reports from Paris: President Jiang Zemins' 5 day State visit ended today. Sonja reports the focus during the visit was clearly on economics, while th issue of human rights was relegated to the sidelines. The two sides signed contracts worth over 3 billion dollars in new business for French companies. Chinese officials also gave the green light for french companies to bid on future contracts that could be worth billions more. In the end Prime Minister Edouard Balladur did bring up the issue, telling Mr. Jiang that the new era in better relations does not mean that human rights should no longer be on the agenda. Later, China's Foreign Minister Qian Qichen (Chen-chi.chun) said Mr. Balladur had mentioned a list of prisoners. But Mr. Qian insisted that some of the prisoners on the list are people who have simply broken the law and he said the list also contained, as he put it, some imaginary names. (EuroTibet News N·2)
