Lhasa, September 28. A meteorological service system passed appraisal of Chinese meteorological experts after three years of installations and debugging and went into formal operation Tuesday [27th September] in the Tibet Autonomous Region, southwest China. By way of netting up microcomputer work stations, the system mainly deals with the requirements, transmission, processing and storage of satellite meteorological information, and various meteorological information services. The system's trial operation during the year proved that it had been fairly efficient and accurate in forecasting local weather conditions. At the beginning of the year, the system offered timely and accurate forecasts of four heavy snowfalls six to 28 hours in advance. The system will be of great help to local farming and livestock raising against natural disasters, experts said. (EuroTibet News N·3)
