Dharamsala, November 6. We welcome the release on November 6, 1994 of four prominent Tibetan political prisoners - Yulo Dawa Tsering, Thupten Namdrol, Ms. Chungdak and Tsewang Palden - by the Chinese authorities. We, however, believe that this is more an outcome of continued international pressure than a genuine Chinese sincerity in ameliorating the situation in Tibet. "If we study the current political situation in Tibet, the latest Chinese announcement, of course, does not represent any significant change in their human rights policy", said Kalon Tenzin N. Tethong, the Tibetan Minister for Information & International Relations. Although the Chinese authorities have made great publicity about reducing the sentence period of the four political prisoners, in reality they were all due for release within a year or two, according to their initial sentences. The world has already witnessed these kinds of propaganda exercises used by the Chinese authorities in the past. (EuroTibet News nr.5)
