AUSTRALIA STRESSES TIBET ISSUE IN QIAO TALKS.

Canberra, November 8. According Reuter corrispondent, "Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Gareth Evans, under pressure from opposition parties, said on Tuesday he had stressed the issue of repression in Tibet in his talks with Chinese parliament chairman Qiao Shi. Evans said he had told Qiao that China should drop the restrictive conditions it insisted must be met before talks could begin with Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. 'I certainly made clear my view, the Australian government's view, among other things, that it would be extremely desirable for there to be a dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama without restrictive conditions', Evans told parliament. Evans said it would be inappropriate to divulge Qiao's response in Monday night's talks. China, which invaded Tibet in 1950, says the Dalai Lama must recognise Tibet's incorporation into China before talks can begin. Qiao, chairman of the National People's Congress, is in Australia until Sunday. His appearance in the Senate viewing gallery o

n Monday brought Tibetan protests into the parliament, disrupting debate until they were thrown out. (EuroTibet News nr.5)
