Beijing, November 12. According UPI, "Beijing sentenced a Chinese journalist to six years in prison for 'leaking state secrets', in a closed trial that neither her lawyers nor husband were told was taking place, Western human rights groups said Saturday. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists and two other human rights organizations condemned the sentencing of 50-year-old Gao Yu, a Hong Kong magazine journalist who had been detained since Oct. 2, 1993, two days before she was to fly to the United States for a research fellowship. 'Gao's detention and trial violate all international standards of due process of law', journalist committee executive director William Orme said in comments faxed to Western news agencies in Beijing. 'She has been tried without counsel, without permission to notify her family'. (EuroTibet News nr.5)
