New York, November 29. The U.N. got its first look at religious intolerance in China, as rapporteur Abdelfattah Amor ended a two-day trip to Tibet on Sunday Reuter reported on Saturday. Amor, who works for the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, came at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the first time the 45-year-old communist state has allowed a U.N. investigation of religious freedom, said diplomats. After his arrival in China last week, Amor attended several days of meetings in Beijing and then visited the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, on Friday. Tibetan Buddhist monks and lamas are disciples of the Dalai Lama, their god-king. They have been a source of ongoing religious unrest in a region marked by discontent against Chinese rule.
