Dharamsala, November 30. The closing day of the International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi was marked by commotion at the Chinese stall. The International Trade Fair is held every year from November 14 to 25. Many countries exhibit their trade products. But this year, on November 25, 1994 about 48 members of the Delhi chapter of the Tibetan Youth Congress gathered outside the Hall of China which had a stall from the so-called Tibet autonomous region. A delegation was formed there consisting of four girls. They distributed handouts about the real situation in Tibet to the people who came to see the Chinese exhibition. The commotion started when the youth delegation members started giving handouts on Tibet to the Chinese stall keepers. The Chinese stall keepers laughed sarcastically to the youth delegation. The youth delegation could not bear the attitude of the Chinese stall keepers and they raised anti-Chinese slogans in the Hall of China. They were at once joined by their counterparts who were
waiting outside the Hall of China. They burned four flags of the People's Republic of China during their demonstration. The main reason for demonstration was to show to the outside world that Tibet was not a part of Communist China as shown in the exhibition. Later they were arrested by the police and kept under custody for three days. All of them were released on bail on November 28. The demonstrators consist of 28 girls and 20 boys. Formed on October 7, 1970, Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) is a world-wide organisation of Tibetans dedicated to the restoration of complete independence for Tibet and the creation of democratic Tibetan society. Over the years, Tibetan Youth Congress has emerged as the largest and the most active non-governmental organisation with a membership of about 12,000. It has the largest followers in the exiled Tibetan community. It has 57 regional branches in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Canada and Japan. Tibetan Youth Association in New York (USA) and Tibetan Youth Association of Europe were af
filiated to it. Recently, the Tibetan Youth Congress has launched a political party in the exiled Tibetan Community aiming to train the people from now onward for a truly democratic country when it gets its independence. The name of the newly launched party is called 'The Tibetan National Democratic Party'. It is based in Dharamsala. (EuroTibet News N·6)
