Barcelona, December 11. According to Reuter news agency, "Tibet's exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama called on Sunday for the West to force greater democracy in China and not to limit deals with Peking simply to commercial accords, EFE news agency reported. The Dalai Lama, in Barcelona for a meeting of leading Buddhists from around the world, said economic agreements alone with the Chinese leadership 'are not sufficient'. When the West signs accords with Peking 'it must bear in mind all the implications', he said. The Buddhist leader, whose country was invaded by China in 1951, said he was in favour of collaboration with communist China but said if the West failed to urge the Chinese leadership to implement reforms, the situation in Tibet would never improve. He said the Chinese government was intent on reducing Tibetans to an insignificant minority in their own country. The Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his
campaigning in favour of independence for his Himalayan homeland". (EuroTibet News N·8)
