Dharamsala, December 14. 65-year old Lobsang Yonten who was arrested in May 1993, with Lhasa tour guide Gendun Rinchen and Bharkor shopkeeper Dhamchoe Palmo, is dead. The death occurred on October 30, 1994 according to an information belatedly received from Tibet. Lobsang Yonten's death came after a prolonged illness and continued medical treatment as a result of torture he received during his incommunicado detention by the Chinese police in Tibet. One of the most prominent political prisoners in Tibet in the last couple of years, he was released on January 10, 1994, according to an information released at the time by Amnesty International, London. The release of the two men, and a young woman named Dhamchoe Palmo, came after a strong international campaign, including a European Community demarche. (EuroTibet News N·8)
