ELECTIONS IN TAIWAN.

March 12, 1994. All three of Taiwan's main political parties are claiming success in Saturday's elections. The ruling K.M.T held off challenges from the Opposition Democratic Progressive Party in both the Provincial Governor's race and in the Mayor's race in the southern city of Kaohsiung. The opposition D.P.T was disappointed not to win the Governor's race, but scored a significant victory by taking the Mayorship of the capitol city of Taipei. The one year old Chinese new party failed to win any of the major races, but signals its arrival as a serious politial force by taking nearly 30 percent of the vote in Taipei, and pushing the K.M.T candidate into third place. While there were no big surprises in the election results, analysts say the progress made by the two opposition parties shows the political landscape of the island is changing, and a truly multi-party political system is finally emerging.
