LETTER SENT TO MR. BOUTROS-BOUTROS GHALI
10 March 1995
Mr. Boutros-Boutros Ghali
Secretary General
United Nations
new York, NY
Your Excellency:
On the 36th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising, we, the members of the US-Tibet Committee, the International Campaign for Tibet and the Transnational Radical Party, like to bring Your Excellency's attention to the deplorable situation in Tibet.
The issue of Tibet is as old as the United nations which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. But unlike the United nations, Tibet has nothing to celebrate about. Ever since China's invasion and occupation of Tibet, the situation there has greatly deteriorated and the Tibetan people do not enjoy even basic human rights which we take for granted elsewhere in the world.
We ask nothing form the United Nations except that it implement the three resolutions on Tibet passed in 1959, 1961 and 1965 which called on China to respect the fundamental human rights of the Tibetan people, including their right to self-determination.
One way the united Nations can go about doing this is to grant observer status to the Tibetan Government-in-exile headed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who is recognized as the legitimate leader go Tibet by both Tibetans in and outside of Tibet.
We have taken the liberty of enclosing a copy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's 10th March statement for this year, which we hope will give you a sense of the gravity of the situation the Tibetan people face.
Sincerely,
Sonam Wangdu , Chairman of US-Tibet Committee
Steve Di Costanzo, President of US-Tibet Committee
Kelsang Aukatsang, International Campaign for Tibet
Marino Busdachin, Transnational Radical Party Secretary
