MEMBERS OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT SUGGEST WEI JINGSHENG TO THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

Bruxelles, February 2, 1994. MEPs from several groups have proposed Wei Jingsheng as a candidate to the Nobel Peace Prize 1995 because, said Adelaide Aglietta, the main promoter of the initiative, of "his extraordinary commitment to human rights and the affirmation of democracy in China". Wei Jingsheng, MP Aglietta recalls, was one of those initiating the "Peking spring" and while in prison (he had purged a 15-year sentence in prison and was again incarcerated in April 1994; since this date there has been no news of him) he defended the rights of Tibet in a long letter to Deng Xiao Ping.
