UPDATE ON HARRY WU

From: World Tibet Network News. Wednesday, July 5th, 1995

Human rights activist Harry Wu, a member of the Committee of 100 for Tibet and Executive Director of the Laogai Research Foundation, is still being held incommunicado by the Chinese.

The U.S. State Department sent someone to Horgas in Xinjiang province, where a spokesman at the Chinese Embassy in Washington had said Harry was being detained at the Karamay Hotel. The hotel, local Public Security Bureau, and local Foreign Ministry all claimed they had never heard of Harry Wu. U.S. officials are reportedly "furious." Peter Tarnoff, the third ranking person in the State Department, called in the Chinese Charge d'affaires yesterday (the third such meeting, each one with a higher U.S. official).

The Chinese official gave the same line for the third time: Wu is being investigated for having violated Chinese law, including entering restricted areas during his trip to China from April 1 - May 6, 1994. The Charge d'affaires is silent when asked Harry's whereabouts. The House and Senate both passed resolutions - House on Thursday night and Senate on Friday. We have not yet received the wording of the resolutions.

It is unclear how the Administration is going to escalate and/or retaliate for not being able to see Harry. It is developing into a serious diplomatic problem for them. Observers are beginning to say they appear weak and impotent. Ching Lee Wu, Harry's wife, attended a ceremony in Milpitas, California yesterday, tying a yellow ribbon on city hall.
