The Dalai Lama's Birthday Celebrated in France

From: World Tibet Network News, Friday, July 14th 1995

by Jean-Marie BRODU for CSPT and TIBET INFO

Though a bit late for such broadcast, here are a few moments of Tibet life in France for His Holiness' birthday!...

On 6th july a broadcast on Radio France International (heard wprldwide for the French speaking community) has given a few minutes interview by Jean-Paul Ribes, President of the CSPT France. On the question "do you think the Tibetan Community has a chance to survive the Chinese invasion ?" the answer was rather optimistic with saying "If you had asked me the question 'what do you think of the future of the Jew community in 1940, or the Armenian one in 1919, what would anyone have answered ?' Then though the situation is terrible in Tibet now, I wish to keep optimistic for the real survival of the Tibetan culture in future"

On TV, on 6th july, the film "Tibet, Histoire d'une tragedie" has been broadcasted. This movie, made with the help of the Bureau du Tibet Paris with the TV "France 3" is a very rich collection of archives, including very rare ones and has had a positive impact. This movie was also shown on the 9th jul celebration (see below)

On 9th jul,, the Bureau du Tibet Paris and the Tibetan Community organised an evening for His Holiness birthday. Starting with a short religious celebration, it went on with dances, songs and music from the Tibetan community in France. After a pause where we could eat some tibetan food, the movie "Tibet, histoire d'une tragedie" was shown. A moment of emotion for everyone... About 350 people attended this meeting.

On different ways (direct mail, faxes, or messages left on TIBET INFO minitel network), we received a number of messages to wish H.H. a happy birthday. Among lots of messages coming from individuals, there were 2 important ones, the first from Jacques Golliet, President of the French Senate's 'Groupe d'Amitis Parlementaire pour le Tibet', and the second from Louis de Broissia, President of the "Groupe d'Etudes Parlementaires sur les problemes du Tibet" of the Assemblee Nationale.

There were also a few articles in the press, but mainly on the Panchen Lama reincarnation.

Long life to His Holiness and all the best to all of you
