MUNICH, Germany, July 15, 1995 (AP) -- On the final day of a visit by Chinese President Jiang Zemin, German automakers signed new deals Saturday to make cars in China.
Jiang said he was "very happy" with his four-day visit, which focused on expanding business ties. German officials soft-pedaled requests for China to free jailed dissidents and give more autonomy to Tibet.
Audi signed a $232 million agreement to make 30,000 cars and 50,000 six-cylinder motors each year in Changchun, northern China, joining a 1991 joint venture between Volkswagen and China's First Automobile Works. Major German companies signed eight other contracts worth $3 billion on Thursday.
At a luncheon Saturday, Bavarian Governor Edmund Stoiber shied away from raising specific complaints about the treatment of prisoners.
