BEIJING, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- In a bid to deflect ongoing accusations of mismanagement and bureaucratic finagling, Chinese organizers of the U.N. Conference on Women painted a rosy picture Monday of their preparations for the parallel Non-governmental Organization Forum.
Seventeen of the 33 hotels in Huairou located on "scenic Lake Yanxi" will provide delegates with "a healthful experience," the China Organizing Committee said in statement released to news organizations.
Hotels around the lake are still under renovation, but will be ready by the start of the event, the statement said. China has been under fire for its last-minute choice of Huairou for the Aug. 30-Sept. 8 forum and its alleged efforts to circumvent U.N. agreements that guarantee full media coverage of the gathering and grant participants the right to use their own video equipment and printed materials.
The NGO Forum was initially scheduled to be held at the Worker's Stadium in central Beijing, but the Chinese organizers abruptly switched the venue to Huairou in April, citing structural defects.
Critics, however, believe the decision to move the meeting 40 miles (60 km) north of Beijing reflects the government's bid to isolate women critical of its human rights record.
The government has already denied visas to groups from Taiwan, Tibet and Iran, allegedly for political and religious reasons.
Informed sources said the State Council, China's cabinet, the Foreign Ministry and Public Security Bureau have held joint sessions strategizing how to contain displays of overt activism, religious proselytizing and the dissemination of literature condemning China's communist government and family-planning policies that include forced abortion.
