Lhasa. 3rd September: On 2nd September, while visiting People's Liberation Army PLA units stationed in Tibet, Zhang Wannian, Central Delegation deputy head, Central Military Commission member and chief of PLA's general staff, demanded that officers and men throughout the autonomous region firmly memorize the tasks entrusted by the party and the people by taking up the heavy responsibility of safeguarding both border security and social stability.
On behalf of the Central Military Commission and leaders of the three general departments of the PLA, Zhang Wannian extended cordial greetings to all officers and men of PLA units stationed in Tibet - who guard the southwestern frontier of the motherland all year round - and staff and workers and their families.
After hearing a work report presented by leaders of the Tibet Military District, Zhang Wannian said: PLA units in Tibet have achieved fruitful results in carrying out their arduous missions under adverse natural conditions and difficult circumstances. In particular, various units have remarkably accomplished their missions in recent years in safeguarding frontier defence, maintaining social stability, strengthening ideological and political education, intensifying military training, enhancing army-government and army-people unity and reinforcing Tibet's economic construction and social development.
Zhang Wannian pointed out: The party Central Committee and the Central Military Commission have given a series of explicit instructions on strengthening army building under the new period; officers and men of units stationed in Tibet should have them solidly enforced after taking respective realities into consideration. He emphasized: Units stationed in Tibet must vigorously intensify ideological and political construction, voluntarily safeguard the authority of the party Central Committee at any time and under any circumstances, maintain close unanimity with the party Central Committee and the Central Military Commission and further strengthen army-government and army-people solidarity. He urged the vast numbers of officers and men of units stationed in Tibet to strengthen military training, study hard for scientific and cultural knowledge and further enhance their fighting capability under high-technology conditions to turn the force into a great steel wall in safeguarding Tibet's stability and the moth
erland's unification.
