OTTAWA, Oct 3 (Reuter) - Chinese Premier Li Peng will likely face a candlelight vigil as part of protests being coordinated by human rights activists during an official visit to Canada, rights campaigners said on Tuesday.
Li will be visiting Canada from October 12-14 and will be the guest of honour at a Montreal dinner on October 13 grouping provincial premiers and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
Carol Samdup of the Canada-Tibet Committee said a candlelight vigil will be held at the dinner to honour those under Chinese occupation in Tibet. "It's not right for a country such as Canada to be wining and dining basically criminals -- international criminals -- not for money, not for trade, not for anything," she said.
Amnesty International and Greenpeace will also protest at the Chinese premier's visit, human rights campaigners said.
Besides the Tibet issue, activists are still upset by the massacre of pro-democracy students in Tiananmen Square in 1989, and Greenpeace is critical of China's nuclear tests.
