HUNGER STRIKE UPDATE: DAY SIX

From: World Tibet Network News, Thursday, October 19, 1995

Today is the sixth day of the six Tibetans' Hunger Strike Until Death in front of the U.N. The hunger strikers have grown physically quite weak, but remain mentally alert and in good spirits. After six days of nothing but water and lemon juice, there has been considerable weight loss and they are now speaking less to conserve energy.

Media coverage continues to build, with appearances today by reporters from Reuters and the Associated Press, in addition to numerous independent photojournalists and freelance reporters. Several people mentioned that they had learned of the hunger strike in today's New York Times.

The hunger strikers are encouraged by the numerous phone calls from Tibetans throughout North America. Tibetans have been calling the Rangzen Office daily to say that they are praying for the health of the six hunger strikers as well as the six million Tibetans still in Tibet under Chinese occupation.

Although there has been no response from the United Nations or from the member states, many delegates regularly stop by the site at 47th Street and First Avenue to offer their support. Several delegates have become quite concerned, and expressed their hopes that the UN issue a statement soon.
