GIVE TIBET A VOICE

Text of New York Times Ad, Op-Ed Page, Oct.22 1995

GIVE TIBET A VOICE

THE UNITED NATIONS has negotiated peace and resolved conflicts in many parts of the world. However, for the last 30 years, it has remained silent about the plight of the Tibetan people under China's illegal occupation since 1949.

THE TIBETAN PEOPLE have always used peaceful means to call the world's attention to the repressive situation in Tibet. Now, in desperation, six Tibetans are on a hunger strike until death at the door step of the United Nations. Will the UN sit by and watch them die?

WE CALL UPON the UN to implement its 159, 1961 and 1965 resolutions on Tibet by demanding that China stop the denial of the fundamental rights of the Tibetan people, including the right to self-determination.

WE CALL UPON the UN Secretary general to urge China to respond positively to His Holiness the Dalai Lama's call for negotiations to resolve the Tibetan issue.

WE CALL UPON the UN Secretary General to give the Tibetan people a voice by inviting our leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, to address the General Assembly.
