PERSECUTIONS IN TIBET

Information Agency "Express-Chronicle", Moscow, News Report N 1840 (daytime)

December 19, 1995, Tuesday

<03> DURING THIS YEAR THERE HAVE BEEN 23 DEMONSTRATIONS IN TIBET AGAINST THE CHINESE OCCUPATION. The Moscow Center for Tibet Culture and Information (CTCI) informed on December 19 that this has been the largest figure since 1989. The number of arrested demonstrators, according to the CTCI, is also the greatest.

The Chinese police makes raids on the monastaries and nunnaries of Tibet and arrests monks and nuns. During the last half year the policemen arrested 88 people. Many Tibetans flee from the persecutions to Nepal, but the Nepal administration gives them away to the Chinese police, despite the protests of the international bodies.

The Center for the Tibet Culture and Information also expressed its concern about the life of the six year boy Gendun Chokii Niim, whom Dalai Lama (the spiritual and political leader of Tibet) had proclaimed a new reincarnation of Panchen Lama, as well as about the lives of his parents and brother. The boy is said to have "disappeared" five months ago. The Chinese authorities have refused to give any information about his whereabouts. An officer of the Republic's Foreign Office has stated that the boy "must be among the Chinese People".
