SATYAGRAHA: PUBLISHER'S NOTE

This booklet titled 'Satyagraha' (Truth-Insistence) is written by Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche. It is a concise plan for a nonviolent movement in the form of spiritual practice for regaining the freedom of Tibet. The original work in Tibetan language was, in the beginning, literally translated into English by Acharya Sangye Tendar, Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Dharamsala. Generally, literal translation of such work becomes vague. Therefore, a revision was felt necessary. Thereafter, Ven. Ngawang Samten, Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarnath and Mr. John Dunn, Havard University, USA, retranslated it. Dr. Ngawang Phuntsok, Associate Professor Fullerton, University of California, USA, has further contributed useful suggestions.

Due to different nature of expression in different languages a translated work is not as smoothly comprehensible as that of written directly in the source language. But we hope the present translation is fairly comprehensible to the readers.

Prof. Ramesh Chandra Tiwari has offered comments and suggestion on the booklet. But since the original Tibetan version is already published, his suggestion could not be incorporated in the text. But they are printed in the appendices Nr 1, 2 & 3 as supplementary reading material. Many other volunteers have contributed to publish this booklet.

"With Satya combined with Ahimsa, you can bring the world to your feet. Satyagraha in its essence is nothing but the introduction of truth and gentleness in the political, i.e., the national life."

M.K. Gandhi, YI, March 1920

"Self-sacrifice of one innocent man is a million times more potent than the sacrifice of million men who die in the act of killing others. The willing sacrifice of the innocent is the most powerful retort to insolent tyranny that has yet been conceived by God or man."

M.K. Gandhi, YI, 12 Feb. 1925

"Satyagraha is gentle, it never wounds. It must not be the result of anger or malice. It is never fussy, never impatient, never vociferous. It is the direct opposite of compulsion. It was conceived as a complete substitute for violence."

M.K. Gandhi, H. 15 April 1933

"In every great cause it is not the number of fighters that counts but it is the quality of which they are made that becomes the deciding factor. The greatest men of the world have always stood alone."

M.K. Gandhi, YI, 10 Oct. 1929
