Three flags usually fly on the triple pole facing the City Hall of Berkeley. The United States flag in the centre and on the sides the United Nations flag and the State of California flag. But on March 10th a fourth flag has been risen. The multicolored flag of Tibet. Placed underneath the U.N. flag it has flown all day.
At 9.00am at the cerimony of hoisting the flag about 70 people gathered around the poles. Most of them were members of the local Tibetan community. They sang some of songs traditional of their land. I took part to the gathering as a representative of the Transnational Radical Party and addressed the small crowd with a short speech. Thanking the city of Berkeley and mentioning some of the cities that chose to be close to the Tibetan people in this very special day. I felt emotion in the people in front of me when I mentioned the city of Sarajevo.
Tibet Day then continued in the nearby San Francisco with a march from the city center to the Chinese Consulate and a vigil there.
Thanks to everyone who worked for this initiative.
