ASSEMBLY OF MOSCOW RADICALS

(Moscow, June 5, 1996) - The assembly of Moscow Radicals has taken place today in the hall of Memorial Society. The meeting convened more than 80 participants - members of Radical Party, members and adherents of Anti-militarist Radical Association (ARA).

The introductory speech had been pronounced by Nikolaj Khramov, coordinator of Radical Party in Russia and secretary of ARA, who described the situation in Radical Party after the previous Radical assembly in February, this year with particular attention to the petition campaigns addressed to the UN Secretary General to receive H. H. the Dalai Lama and for nomination Wej Jingsheng, a prominent Chinese dissident, for Nobel Peace Prize 1997; to the postcard campaign to defend the young Panchen Lama, Gedun Chokyi Nyima; and to the anti-militarist campaign conducted by Radicals in Russia (in particular, the First Congress of ARA scheduled on June 29-30 in Moscow).

Afterwards Mr Navang Rabgyal, personal representative of H. H. the Dalai Lama in Russia, CIS and Mongolia and Radical member for 1996, informed about recent developments in and around Tibet, stressing the big positive role of Radical Party in the worldwide struggle for freedom of Tibet.

In course of debates, assembly participants gave the main attention to the upcoming 1st Congress of ARA and to the heavy situation of the party and ARA - both in terms of membership and finances, - as well as to the necessity to strengthen the struggle for a democratic law on conscientious objection in spite of president Yeltsin's recent decree about professional army by the 2000. The assembly informally decided (since it was not a formal statutory event - neither for the party, nor for the association) to develop - at least until the 1st Congress of ARA - petition campaign "Abolition Of Conscription By The 2000, Alternative Civilian Service Now!", as well as postcard campaign to release Gedun Chokyi Nyima.

During the assembly there were sold several dozens of postcards for liberation of Panchen Lama. 2 new members enrolled to the Radical Party for 1996, and 3 - to ARA, while another 2 persons have contributed part of 1996 fee to the party, declaring their intention to be fully enrolled within few days.
