Awarded: To Wei Jinghseng, one of China's leading dissidents, the 1996 Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought. Wei Jingsheng has spent most of the last 20 years in prison for his outspoken comments on human rights. Former winners of the prize, which was instituted by the European Parliament in 1985 as a tribute to Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, include South Africa's Nelson Mandela and Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi.
