"I truly believe that individuals can make a difference in society. Since periods of great change such as the present one come so rarely in human history, it is up to each of us to make the best use of our time to help create a happier world".

THE "ONE FLAG FOR TIBET" CAMPAIGN OPENS.

THE OBJECTIVE IS TO HAVE 3,000 MAYORS OF THE WORLD SUPPORT IT FOR MARCH 9TH AND 10TH, 1997.

THE FIRST 68 SUPPORTERS.

In the final document of the second International Conference of Tibet Support Groups in Bonn it was reaffirmed that the 1997 "One Flag for Tibet" campaign would be of fundamental importance in order to make the 9th and 10th of next March great days for the freedom of Tibet. The campaign, which was inserted in the preparation plans for the 1998 Satyagraha, was born with the motive of increasing the institutional reserve of support for the struggle, and involving the maximum possible number of municipal representatives and territorial administrations. It is a difficult strategy to realize, but it is based on the great successes of last year and points to the achievement of the objective in 1997. 3,000 community flags will, on March 9th and 10th of 1997, fly the flag of the lion of the snows. last year more than 600 cities participated, and among them were numerous capitals. This year, after numerous months of preparation, of study of geographical reserves of support and their respective nations, we are prepari

ng to send, in the coming days, numerous letters by mail, while we remain in strict coordination with the numerous Tibet Support Groups and the Tibetan Community in Switzerland.

We have already had the first responses and new pledges of support, along with the confirmation of numerous mayors who participated in 1996. 68 mayors are supporting the plan as of November 4th. It is a small base at the beginning but, considering the importance of this occasion, it makes it even more necessary to give your support. The objective of 3,000 mayors is difficult, though not impossible. Contact your mayor, send materials to him or her (available from the TRP office in Brussels), and fix an appointment with him as soon as possible in order to explain the initiative.

One last bit of good news: after the assignment of the 1996 Sacharov prize to Wei Jingsheng, the archbishop of Johannesburg, Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate of 1989, supports Wei Jingsheng's candidacy to the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.

MARCH 9TH AND 10TH,1997:

A FLAG FOR TIBET; ALREADY 68 MAYORS SUPPORT THE ACTION.

The list, for the moment, is divided in two sections: "Confirmed 1996" for the mayors who participated last year and who confirm their participation for this year and the : "New Supporters" list for those mayors who are taking part in this event for the first time. Among these important participants is the mayor of Strausburg and European deputy, Catherine TRAUTMANN.

In these days many mailings are taking place - in Italy, Spain, Hungary, Norway, Switzerland, France, Croatia, Sloven, Belgium, and Austria - in collaboration with the Tibetan community in Switzerland and the numerous Tibet Support Groups.

We turn also to the non-European Tibet Support Groups who also wish to take part in the campaign. We are thinking, in particular of our friends in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, South Africa, India, Mexico, and the American islands. You may put yourself in contact with the TRP in Brussels (paolo Atzori or Tiziana Falletti Tel: 32-2-284 - 230.41.21) for any information. This campaign needs people who, in the coming months, can dedicate time to solicit their mayors to support the campaign.

We get the chills, and we are nervous because the campaign is only 125 days away, and we hope to recruit the remaining 2,932 dollars before March 9th at 3:00 pm

Good luck to all.
