A delegation of European Parliamentarians consisting of Bertel HAARDER (Vice President of the EP and of Denmark's Liberal party), Olivier DUPUIS (Reformer [Italy/Belgium] and secretary of the TRP), Gary TITLEY (Labor Party Member [UK] and Graham WATSON (Liberal Party [UK]) encountered in recent days with high officials of the British territory, which on July 1st will return to Chinese sovereignty. The European deputies met, among others, Chris PATTEN (governor), C.H. TUNG (governor-in-waiting), Christine LO (President of the Legislative Council), Martin LEE (leader of the Democratic Party), Rita FAN (President of the Provisional Legislative Council), and Gladys LI (President of the Justice Department). After the encounters the deputies expressed the intention of proposing a strong recommendation to the European Union. Among the various points it will address will be a request that the European Commission provide an annual report on civil and human rights in Hong Kong, which will be discussed by the European
Parliament. The European Parliament will have to continue to direct funds for projects of the defense and promotion of human rights and the development of democracy in Hong Kong and other nations.
