a. Some thoughts in connection to the PRC's celebration of IMAR's 50th anniv.
These days , the Chinese Communist Party's No. 1 paper ---The People's Daily (http://www.snweb.com/gb/people_daily/ ; use Guo Biao code to browse) has paid special attention to the Inner Mongolia. According to my memory, the last time the Chinese official media gave such "an honor" to IM was the celebration of 40th anniv. on 1987. This time, it is the 50th ann., half a century, so they may give more media coverage.
According to the Zhong Yang ( CCP's Central Committee) 's head of delegation to Inner Mongolia , deputy prime minister Zou Jiahua ( on the 40th anniv, the head was Ulaankhuu, he was the Vice president of the PRC at the time, so this time , the official rank of the delegation was lower than that time, :-) .By the way, Ulaankhuu's son Bukhee is the "second-head" this time), the various ethnic people of Inner Mongolia who have a glorious revolutionary tradition, have made great contribution to the great motherland's unification and to the development of the Cathay nation (Zhong Hua Min Zu).... and under the party (CCP)'s leadership, they struggled very hard to overthrow the 'ECthree big mountain' ( I can't recall exactly the names of these three mountain , though I had remembered it thousands of times :-) ) and finally established the IMAR on May 01, 1997. ( The CCP should celebrate the anniv. on May 01, 1997. I think the reason why they have delayed the date is that, the meat in Inner Mongolia was not fat enou
gh in May to the CCP official to enjoy) Aftermath, under the party's glorious shine of the policies toward the nationalities, the IM have reached great achievement on the constructions of socialism, especially after Comrade Deng Xiao Ping's theory of EC building the socialism with Chinese characters=EE, the whole region has been in a state of politics is in stable',=EB economy is in prosperous', nationalities are united' and =EBthe society is developed'. Mr. Zou has some statistic data to prove it, such as Inner Mongolia has become the country's base of energy and natural resources, also the average income of the urban people was 3102 ($373.73) per year and the income of the rural area people was 1602($193.01) per year in 1996 etc.
In his long speech ( more than 5 pages in Chinese ), he never mentioned the suffering the party has brought to the Mongols. After their 50 years of rule, the party may think the Mongols of Inner Mongolia is the first to be totally tamed (in fact, the IMAR is the first autonomous region, so the party should have enough confidence on that) and the few million (compared to the 25 million Chinese) Mongols are not counted a big deal any more for the party to have to admit the =ECsmall mistake=EE they had committed before (the party used to include such a small sentence in such a speech).
According to the Reuter report about a group of Mongolians protest against the China's rule in Inner Mongolia , the official of the Chinese Embassy said that the embassy would complain to the Mongolian authorities about the demonstration. I don't know what kind of complaint they have and what is the right for them to complain such a demonstration to a government of an independent country. Please note, the embassy official also talked about the right and said that ``These people (the demonstrator have no right to represent the people of Inner Mongolia,''. Apparently, the Mongols of Inner Mongolia has long lost their right to represent themselves and the transference of the right from the Mongols to the Chinese is what exactly the CCP is celebrating these days. They may think , after 50 years of elaborately calculated transfer, the transference is almost come to an end.
May Tenger bless Inner Mongolia.

c. WTN 7/25/97 Persecution of the spirit
2. Persecution of the spirit
-----------------------------------------------------------
Boston Globe, July 25, 1997, Editorial
This week's State Department report on the persecution of Christians around the world performs a useful function insofar as it exposes the oppression of believers under diverse regimes. The act of compiling such a report also expresses the solidarity most Americans feel for people anywhere who are prevented from practicing their religion or injured for praying to their divinity.
In accordance with a congressional mandate, the report pays particular attention to the persecution of Christians under the vestigial Communist regime that rules China. ``The government of China has sought to restrict all actual religious practice to government-authorized religious organizations and registered places of worship,'' the report notes, illuminating the political and totalitarian quality of Beijing's intolerance for any independent religious authority.
Because of the political basis for religious intolerance in China, Beijing's persecution of Mahayana Buddhists in occupied Tibet has been particularly brutal. In Tibet, the Chinese destroyed 6,000 monasteries, many with irreplaceable libraries. Nuns and monks have been imprisoned, tortured, and killed for their beliefs. Beijing's cynical efforts to select successors to the most exalted figures in Tibetan Buddhism, the Panchen Lama and the Dalai Lama, reflect a conqueror's disdain for the spiritual uniqueness of the Tibetans.
Equally deserving of solidarity are persecuted Muslims in the Chinese province of Xinjiang, Christians and animists in Sudan, Buddhists in Vietnam, and Muslims in war-torn Bosnia. The Enlightenment idea of tolerance should extend to all victims of religious persecution, not just one branch of human spirituality.

PETA MEMBER ARRESTED AT "TODAY" SHOW WINDOW
Appearance By Notorious Animal Trainer Protested

New York -- To protest Tuesday's Today show appearance by David McMillan, an exotic animal trainer who has been videotaped beating his animals, a PETA member was arrested this morning after she charged past Al Roker and scrawled the word "SHAME" on the Today show window.
PETA's undercover investigation last summer of McMillan's Tiger's Eye Productions training school in Oviedo, Fla., revealed McMillan hit tigers in the face with an ax handle, shoved an ax handle down a lion's throat, dragged leopards across the ground by chains around their necks, and deprived big cats of food to force them to "perform."
Pancho--one of the lions whose beatings were videotaped--was rented out to Disney for Elton John's "Lion King" video. Disney has since announced they will no longer use McMillan's company. Same goes for Exxon, which instituted a company-wide policy against all exotic animal appearances after seeing how McMillan "trained" his animals.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- Kissimmee's Splendid China theme park will have an unscheduled attraction tomorrow as animal protectionists converge at its main entrance to protest Tiger's Eye Productions, a captive lion and tiger act that performs there daily and that has drawn national criticism over videotapes showing the big cats having axe handles rammed down their throats and being dragged by chains and struck in the face.
Carrying a banner reading, "Tiger's Eye Productions Beats Big Cats,"
members of PETA and Animal Activists of Central Florida will protest:
Date Time Place
Saturday, May 31 11:30 a.m. to Splendid China, U.S. 192 (3
12:30 p.m. miles west of I-4, exit 25B)
Companies as diverse as Exxon, Hooters restaurants, and the Disney Company have decided never to work with Tiger's Eye Productions again after viewing videotape of its animal "training methods." Even celebrities like Bea Arthur and Newt Gingrich have criticized the act and have called for an investigation.
"Someone has to speak up for these animals," says PETA's Mary Beth Sweetland. "We want the public to realize the chains and whips mean the animals are not volunteers."
