Update on World Artists for TibetWorld Artists for Tibet is an organization whose mission is to bring world-wide attention to the human rights violations which are being perpetrated against the Tibetan people. We are working in collaboration with the European Parliament to engage artists from all over the globe in an event which will unite the world around human rights issues, and our responsibility to intervene on behalf of each other (see our website @http://www.art 4tibet1998.org). His Holiness the Dalai Lama has given his full support for this project.
As of today we are in approximately 45 countries. We have over 1500 artists who have agreed to participate with the project around the world. We have approximately 15 States that are participating and in Canada we have Toronto and Montreal. In New York we have begun contacting some galleries, but most of them will be contacted in September. We do have the Queens Museum, The Museum of Arts and Crafts and the Staten Island Tibet Museum. We have about five galleries that have agreed thus far to join us.
I expect many more when I approach them. We have several other museums around the country. I have made contact in the Hamptons, which is a major artistic community. I spoke with the directors of two of the major art organization in the Hamptons. They have a combined membership of 500 artists. We also met with major cultural organizations in the boro of Queens and received approval from all of them. We will be approaching Brooklyn within the next month and Manhattan shortly after. We have all of the major Tibetan organization behind us including, Tibet House which is planning a big gala on the first day of the event, July 1, 1998. Milarepa Foundation has agreed to collaborate with us and will be talking about the details later in the year. The Gere Foundation has also agreed to join us and will be planning collaboration later in the year.
Some of the artists that have agreed to join us include, Francesco Clemente, Leon Golub, Robet Longo, Peter Nagy, Leslie Dill, Klaus Kertess, Anthony Minghella, Phil Borges, Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon Annie Lennox, Richard Gere, Arto Lindsay and writer Lucy Lippard. I just sent out approximately 30 requests to politicians, writers and others to join our honorary committee. So far, I received acceptance from Mr. Elie Wiesel, Mr. Harry Wu, Mr. Richard Gere, Nena & Robert Thurman, Dr. William Schults, Executive Director of Amnesty international, Dawa Tsering from the Office of Tibet, and Mr.Leon Golub. There will be many others I am sure of that.
In September we are scheduled to perform at the Jacob Javitz Center where there will be approximately 20-30 thousand people. In addition the off Broadway show Tibet Does not Exist will be having an opening night benefit for World Artist and for other organizations.
Our goal is to engage as many people around the world as we possibly can. We are preparing to organize for the two major flims about Tibet which are coming out at the end of the year. More to come as it develops.
