PRESS RELEASE
Moscow, March 10, 2001
Today, March 10, on the 42-nd anniversary of the Tibetan national uprising of 1959 in Lhasa, at the Pushkin square, a manifestation for freedom of Tibet was organized by the Tibetan cultural and information center in Moscow and the Moscow "Society of friends of Tibet".
Activists of the Transnational Radical Party also took part in the manifestation. The coordinator of Russian radicals Nikolay Khramov announced in his speech the launching in Russia of the international campaign under the slogan "Full autonomy for Tibet within three years or international recognition of the Tibetan government in exile".
"We should give up many illusions", Khramov said addressing to the participants of the manifestation. "And first of all - the illusion that in the struggle for freedom of Tibet we can limit ourselves to the love for Tibet, for its culture and religion. The time is catastrophically short. We should give up our habit to gather and rutually mark traditional dates. As citizens of Russia and not only as friends of Tibet, we should begin - immediately, "from Monday" - a political campaign addressed to the deputies to the State Duma whom we elected, to mayors of our cities, to our fellow citizens. A political campaign aimed at the official introduction into the State Duma and voting on the draft of the same resolution which was adopted by the European Parliament last summer: an agreement between the Tibetan government in exile and the government of Chinese People's Republic in Beijing regarding a new status of full autonomy for Tibet within three years; otherwise - international recognition of the Tibetan governmen
t in exile as the sole legitimate representative of the people of Tibet... In our country which is executing a real genocide waging bloody criminal war in Chechnya, which maintains close relations of accompliceship with the communist China, this struggle will be especially difficult. But we don't have other way out". "For your and our freedom!" - Khramov finished his speech with these words addressing to the representatives of the Tibetan diaspora.
