THE RADICAL PARTY'S MISSION IN CHECHNYA
In January, Antonio Stango and Nikolay Khramov went to Chechnya to watch
directly the developments there, to make contact, contribute to correct
information and to start a direct collaboration with democratic Russian
Parliament members and human rights organizations who are struggling to end
the massacre and to find a political solution to the conflict.
After this mission, Antonio Stango went to Moscow and participated in a
round table on the issue of Chechnya and the institutional crisis in
Russia, and invited those Parliament members engaged in human rights
struggles to act in coordination with the Radical Party.
An open letter to President Yeltsin to end air raids and to promote full
respect for human and civil rights, including the right to demonstrate and
to have information, had been sent to him by the Radical Party on the first
day of this year.
Later a demonstration was held in front of the Russian Embassy in Rome and
several were held in Moscow -- the latter in collaboration with the
soldiers' mothers movement, the Helsinki group, "Memorial", and other
associations. The Radical Party then placed a wreath on the tomb of the
Unknown Soldier, in Moscow, near the Kremlin's walls, dedicating it to
Russian soldiers victimized by militarism.
