UNITED NATIONS: THE TRANSNATIONAL RADICAL PARTY HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE
UNITED NATIONS AS A NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION WITH CONSULTATIVE STATUS,
CATEGORY 1. IT IS NOW ONE AMONG ONLY 42 INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS GIVEN
THAT STATUS WHICH ALLOWS TO PRESENT PROPOSALS TO THE UNITED NATIONS AND TO
BE GIVEN AUDIENCE BY THE SECRETARY GENERAL.
PRESS RELEASE
New York, June 20, 1995 - Given the previous hearings' exhaustive
questioning by the delegates of the Committee on Non-Governmental
Organizations, who, during the proceedings had clearly shifted into two
blocks, it appeared that the possibility of being disqualified was very
high. The organizations questioned, indeed walked on a mined field since
any issue could easily become touchy to some of the delegations and in so
doing, seriously impair their chance for approval which depended on a very
delicate balance to reach consensus.
The Transnational Radical Party was questioned intensely on items of
budget, membership, purpose and method and the answers given were
admittedly satisfying to the delegations requesting them.
However, the request of Ethiopia for the release of the identity of the
Transnational Radical Party's members in his country, opened an excited
debate on the procedural propriety of such request.
A breakdown of the delegations stand is:
IN FAVOR: Ireland, Costa Rica, Russia, Bulgaria, United Kingdom,
Philippines, Paraguay, and a particular strong support from India.
AGAINST: Ethiopia, pending compliance with request.
NO OBJECTIONS - China, Cuba, Sudan, Indonesia, Madagascar, Swaziland,
Chile, Greece, U.S.A. and Tunisia.
It must be admitted that having earned the consensual support of all the
delegations, it is nothing less then a full success. The transnational
Radical Party is now a full fledged Non-Governmental Organization with
category 1 status; very honored to have been recognized by the United
Nations and is eager to continue its mission in the international scene.
