UNIVERSAL MORATORIUM: THE EU RESOLVES TO PUT PRESSURE ON THE UN
Strasbourg, 16 June 1995 - On the initiative of the "Riformatori"
Euro-deputies Marco Pannella and Gianfranco Dell'Alba, members of the
transnational and transdivisional Radical Party, the European Parliament
passed by unamimous vote a resolution calling on the Council, the
Commission and the member states "to take all possible steps to ensure that
the General Assembly of the United Nations, during the course of its 50th
plenary session, supports the establishment of a universal moratorium on
capital executions as the first step towards the complete and final
abolition of the death penalty".
In the same resolution, the European Parliament invites "the states in the
USA in which the death penalty is still in force to suspend its
application", and invites the Governor of the State of Pennsylvania "to
postpone the execution of Mr Abu-Jamal, allowing the revision of his trial
to commence".
