GEDUN CHOEKYI NIMA, REINCARNATION OF THE PANCHEN LAMA, KIDNAPPED BY THE

CHINESE AUTHORITIES

Brussels, 23 June 1995 - Statement by Olivier Dupuis: "From official

sources of the Government of Tibetans in exile, we have learnt that the

military authorities of the People's Republic of China have kidnapped a

Tibetan boy of six years old, Gedun Choekyi Nima, recognized by the Dalai

Lama as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, the second-highest religious

authority of Mahayan Buddhism.

The interference of the Peking authorities in the deepest religious aspects

of Buddhism give us cause for alarm and confirm the complete refusal of the

PRC to enter into unconditional negotiations, the only possible peaceful

solution to the Sino-Tibetan question.

On 14 May the Dalai Lama had recognized Choekyi Nima as the reincarnation

of Panchen Rimpoche, who died in 1989; the Peking government then denied

the recognition of the highest Tibetan religious authority, proclaiming

itself as the only authentic authority in this field and denying the Dalai

Lama his role as a supreme spiritual leader.

Also in view of the fact that the Government of Tibetans in exile is

preparing important forms of nonviolent resistance to the Chinese military

occupation of Tibet, we ask the Chinese authorities for an immediate change

in their policy on Tibet with the immediate release of Gedun Cheokyi Nima

and his family, in line with the friendship which had always existed

between the Chinese and Tibetan peoples before the 1959 invasion."
