THREE MEMBERS OF THE RADICAL PARTY OFFER THEMSELVES AS VOLUNTARY HOSTAGES
TO THE CHECHENS
Rome, June - Three members of the transnational and transdivisional Radical
Party were among those who handed themselves over as voluntary hostages to
the Chechen terrorists who had barricaded themselves inside the hospital in
Budennovsk before moving to Daghestan, not far from Grozny. The three
Radical members were the Duma deputies Valeri Borscev ("Jabloko"
parliamentary group) and Juli Rybakov ("Choice for Russia" parliamentary
group), and the journalist Julia Kalinina (former correspondent in
Chechenya for the daily "Moskovski Komsomoletz").
The Radical Party expressed its complete support for the initiative of the
three Russian members, underlining the significance of an initiative which
is in the tradition of Gandhian nonviolent political practice, in reply to
the increasing violence and terror into which the whole of Russia seems to
have fallen since the beginning of the war in Chechenya. Since December,
Borscev and Rybakoc had carried out a number of missions to Chechenya in
order to check on the progess of the military operations and to denounce
the massacre taking place.
The three hostages were finally released near Grozny.
