Statement by H.E. Ambassador J. Enkhsaikhan, Permanent Representative of Mongolia

[...] 4. For the success of both preparatory process and the diplomatic conference, it is important that non-governmental organizations continue to play an active role in the process of establishing the court. My delegation commends those which have already made an important contribution.

5. When addressing the General Assembly last month Mr. Sh. Altangerel, Minister for External Relations of Mongolia confirmed that Mongolia continued to support the convening in 1998 of a Diplomatic Conference on the Establishment of the International Criminal Court. Finalizing and adopting the statute in 1998 and thus strengthening the institutional basis for preventing the perpetration of international crimes and thus contributing to the maintenance of international peace and stability as well as to upholding justice and the rule of law worldwide would be a fitting way to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the adoption of both the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

6. The Mongolian delegation believes that all of us want a criminal court that is independent and effective. For that the Court has to have sufficiently broad and clearly defined inherent jurisdiction and strong commitment of member States. We believe that such a goal is within our reach.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
