Text of report by Ukrainian news agency DINAU Kiev.
The head of the Ukrainian delegation at the 54th session of the UN General Assembly, Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister Borys Tarasyuk, during a general discussion at the forum presented the candidacy of our country for
nonpermanent membership in the UN Security Council for 2000-2001. Elections to the Security Council will take place around the middle of October.
Tarasyuk pointed out that the UN and its Charter are to remain "the anchor" propping the international community on the "stormy waters" of the modern world. At the same time, Borys Tarasyuk spoke for acceleration of reforms
in the UN, first of all, of the UN Security Council, and their adaptation to modern requirements, DINAU learnt at the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry. Tarasyuk stressed the role of Ukraine in
strengthening security on the European continent and in the world in general and the active participation of our country in development of processes of regional cooperation in Europe. The minister emphasized that
Ukraine stands for strengthening the role of international law and calls for strict observance of its main norms and principles by all states. Ukraine also supports launching an international criminal court as a
complementary part of the global security system in next millennium. All this gives grounds to Ukraine as a founder state of the UN to hope for non permanent membership in the Security Council in 2000-2001.
