THE APPEAL OF THE MAJOR OF SARAJEVO TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Dear Sir,

you know that Sarajevo has been totally blockaded for 15 months.

Consequences of such situation culminated during june: there are not any electricity, natural gas, oil and firewood. There is no water in the City and all food reserves are consumed. Hunger is in the City and we can expect epidemies of contagious diseases on a large scale.

Besides all promises and resolutions made by the international community and by its specialized organisations and agencies, 23.719 tons of food have been brought into the city. It means 350 grams a day for an inhabitant. Unfortunately , situation is even worse every day so that, in june, each Sarajevo citizen got only 43 grams of food for a day. That food in extremely bad according to its structure/flour, rice and pasrty/.

We are not able to break informative blockade, inform the world, especially donators and point to the agony of 375 thousnad Sarajevo citizens. There are 58.510 wounde persons, 13.738 wounded children, about 80.000 old and exhausted people and about 70.000 refugees among them. That is why, Presidency of the City Assembly of sarajevo started to go on a protest hunger-strike on the 30th june, 1993. This strike is set of personal responsibility and self sacrifice.

Our purpose is to attract attention of the world public to the cataclysm which threatens the city whose history is 500 year old, city in which people of different nationalities and confessions have lived together for centuries , city which has been opened for all people of good will from all over the world. We want all progressive and democratic forces of the world to be informed about enormous suffering and mass starvation and dieing of epidemiess of the innocent civilians, that will happen probaly very soon, if this City is not helped urgently.

Appreciating your friendly relation to Sarajevo and its citizens, I ask you to inform citizens of your city and the whole public of your country about our decision to go on strike

With hope that you are going to support and help us, in the name of the members of the Presidency of the City Assembly of Sarajevo , I send you my Warment regards.

Sincerly yours

The Mayor of the city

2 Luglio
