ANSA - 4 March, 15:52 - Two objectives this year for the Easter march that will take place on the 3rd of April: joining the international campaign for the abolition of the death penalty by the year 2000, and supporting a rapid operativity of the Permanent Tribunal for crimes against humanity. The point of departure will be analysing the situation in the former Yugoslavia.
The Easter March, whose final stop will traditionally be St.Peter's Square, after passing by significant sites of the city, was presented during a press conference at the presence of the Radical Party Secretary Emma Bonino, the Mayor of Sarajevo Muhamed Kresevljakovic, and the Mayor of Rome, Francesco Rutelli. The initiative is promoted by the Radical Party, the "Hands Off Cain" association and by Caritas Diocesana. Emma Bonino stressed the fact that the commission of experts charged with gathering the evidence of the crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia and the international Court itself lack funds. "There is a budget of $33 million, but the Fifth Permanent Commission of the U.N. General Assembly postponed every decision regarding the financing to 21 March. We are planning to go on a mass fast, added Emma Bonino. The risk is creating a new Berlin or a new Beirut. Small wonder that the rich and wealthy Europe shows indifference".
