EASTER MARCH TO URGE A MORATORIUM OF CAPITAL EXECUTIONS AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PERMANENT INTERNATIONAL COURT.

ANSA - Rome 4 March 1994, 15:57 - The Mayor of Sarajevo promised to give his "personal" support to the demonstration; "I oppose the death penalty" - he said - "also because I am disgusted by it". The Mayor of Rome, Rutelli, also attended the presentation. Rutelli said he intends to write to other Italian mayors to urge their participation and support. He added that he wanted to ask the Town Council to support the international campaign for the abolition of the death penalty. Sergio D'Elia, one of the promoters of the "Hands Off Cain" campaign, said the objectives of the march are contained in a petition, which will be given to the Pope by an international delegation consisting of Nobel Prize winners, eminent scientists, parliamentarians, mayors of Italian and European cities.

"Prosecuting the authors of the crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia, and doing so without ever resorting to the death penalty" - he said - "could be more than just a U.N. resolution: it could become a compulsory step of the international law towards the creation of a Permanent Tribunal for crimes against humanity".

The slogan of the demonstration will be "there can be no peace without justice".
