FIFTH COMMITTEE APPROVES $90 MILLION FOR UNPROFOR, MINURSO AND INTERNATIONAL WAR CRIMES TRIBUNAL

The General Assembly would authorize the Secretary-General to commit nearly $90 million to the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR), the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), and the International War Crimes Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia covering varying periods in 1994, under the terms of three draft texts approved Friday night by its Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary).
The drafts, adopted without a vote, would have the Assembly authorize the Secretary-General to commit:

- $11 million for the period 1 January to 31 December 1994 for the International Tribunal established to prosecute persons responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia since January 1991. The amount includes $5.6 million authorized by the General Assembly last December.

The draft resolution on the International Tribunal was introduced by Flavio Damico (Brazil). The representatives of Mexico, Cuba, India and Uganda spoke on the draft following its approval.

The Committee is expected to meet again on Monday, 25 April, to take up the financing of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) and the United Nations Military Liaison Mission in Cambodia. It would also consider the conditions of service for the International Court of Justice members and the report of the Working Group on the equitable representation of Member States in the Secretariat.
