(Moscow, May 27, 1994) - The demonstration for the abolishing of death sentence to Jurij Belechenko and for the institution of the permanent international tribunal on war crimes has taken place today at 3.00 PM in front of Armenian embassy (Armjanskij pereulok, 2).
Captain Jurij Belechenko, a pilot of Azerbaijanian Air Force and Ukrainian citizen, shot down over Nagorno Karabakh last summer, on May 23 was sentenced to death penalty by the military tribunal of the self-proclaimed "Republic of Nagorno Karabakh" under accusation in commitment of war crimes, in particularly - bombing several villages of Mardakert rayon of Azerbaijan.
While ten participants of the demonstration with Radical flag and slogans in Russian and English - "No Peace Without Justice", "Abolish Death Sentence To Jurij Belechenko", "International Tribunal On War Crimes - Now!", "Trial For War Crimes - Yes, Executions - No!" - were picketing the building of the embassy, the ambassador of the Republic of Armenia in Russian Federation Mr. Felix Mamikonjan received the Radical delegation composed from Nikolaj Khramov, member of the General Council of the Radical Party; rev. Nikon (Lamekin), bishop of the Truly Orthodox Church and member of the RP; and Anna Morozova, Radical activist from Moscow.
During a 40-minutes meeting the Radical representatives expounded for the ambassador Radical Party's position concerning abolishing of death penalty and setting up the permanent international tribunal on war crimes. They also handed over the appeal addressed to the Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrosjan, which contains request to use his influence on the leaders of the Armenian community of Nagorno Karabakh in order to achieve the abolishing of death sentence against Jurij Belechenko and also to undertake - as a head of Armenian state - all the necessary steps in order the permanent international tribunal on war crimes to be instituted by the UN General Assembly during its next session (September - December 1994).
From his side, Mr. Mamikonjan, taking the appeal to the president of the Republic of Armenia, told that he can not to inform his president about it, because Belechenko's case belongs completely and entirely to the competence of judicial bodies of the "Republic of Nagorno Karabakh". He recommended the Radicals to address directly to the authorities of Nagorno Karabakh (no one information service in Moscow has not any information about any kind of the mission or representative office of "Republic of Nagorno Karabakh" in Moscow). Mr. Mamikonjan expressed also his certainty, that Radical appeal connecting the question of death sentence to a hireling with the problem of the international tribunal on war crimes, will be accepted negatively by the official Erevan.
The meeting between Radical delegation and Armenian ambassador was in presence of two correspondents: Radik Batyrshin from Radio Liberty and Liana Minasjan from Nezavisimaja Gazeta. Near the embassy, apart of indicated journalists, were also a correspondent of Interfax news agency and camera group of "2x2" TV channel.
In the same evening Radio Liberty broadcasted the detailed report about the demonstration and meeting of Radical delegation with Armenian ambassador in its daily news program Liberty Life.
