Noon Briefing - 2 - 23 November 1994

Yesterday afternoon, the Secretary-General discussed with the Speaker of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Irene Pivetti, questions relating to the forthcoming Summit for Social Development, the recent International Conference on Population and Development, as well as the current Conference on Organized Transnational Crimes.

The Secretary-General then proceeded to the Italian Senate, where he met with its President, Carlo Scognamiglio, before addressing a joint session of the Foreign and Defence Committees of both Chambers of the Senate on the role of the United Nations in peace and development. The session was followed by a question-and-answer period where Senators and Deputies exchanged views with the Secretary-General on topics ranging from the Middle East peace process, a permanent war crimes tribunal, the referendum in Western Sahara and the issue of sustainable development. The Secretary-General then attended a dinner hosted in his honour by the Speaker of the Italian Senate. A press release would be issued detailing the Secretary-General's activities.
