SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER ON LAST DAY OF OFFICIAL VISIT - 25 November 1994

The following information was provided today by the Spokesman's office:

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, on Thursday, 24 November, the last full day of his official visit to Italy, had a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi during which they had a tour d'horizon of the international situation, including a discussion of the just concluded international crime conference in Naples, recent developments in Bosnia, the forthcoming summit of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe in Budapest, relations between Italy and Albania, and the question of The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

In the context of a discussion on Rwanda, Prime Minister Berlusconi outlined his Government's initiative on the creation of a humanitarian task force for quick intervention in crisis areas. The Secretary-General expressed his support for any initiative which would facilitate rapid intervention in times of crisis. The discussion between the two men continued at a working luncheon given by the Prime Minister in honour of the Secretary-General.

Earlier yesterday afternoon, the Secretary-General paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Rome, Francesco Rutelli, with whom he discussed activities in Rome for the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations and problems of the environment. The Secretary-General then visited the United Nations Information Centre in Rome and met with United Nations staff in Rome before receiving a delegation headed by Emma Bonino, Member of Parliament and Secretary of the Radical Party, who handed him a petition on the establishment of a permanent war crimes tribunal and a world-wide moratorium on capital punishment.
