LETTER OF CHECHEN RADICAL FROM GROZNY

Here is a letter of our friend Mussah Sadulayev, that we have received in Moscow office by FAX.

Mussah Sadulayev is a 26 year old Chechen photo-journalist from Grozny. The war has left him without a shelter: his house in Grozny was turned to a heap of bricks by Russian artillery shells. All that he has now is his old LADA car. Sometimes he sleeps in it, but often in a small two-roomed flat of his friends in Narzanj, where 18 more refugees from Grozny have found a shelter. Every day he starts his car and lives Narzanj for Grozny, Achkhoy-Martan, Samashky -- there, where the war goes on. He takes journalists with him in the very inferno under bullets and bombs and shells.

We made the acquaintance of Mussah in January when Antonio Stango and I visited Chechnia. Hardly we separated from each other those days: Mussah spent sometimes 18 hours a day at his rudder, and we sat beside him, but unlike him, we could sleep sometimes for a while. At the second day of our acquaintance he told us that he wanted to join Radical party. "I wasn't a member of any party,"-- he said,-- "but this is the other way round. I see that you aspire to make pain of Chechnia the pain of the whole world. If so, I want to be with you."

Every two days I wait Mussah to return "from the war" and call me from Narzanj to Moscow. He calls me, and I know, that thanks the Lord everything is OK, and he has returned home alive and healthy. Now I wait him again...
