BONN, May 2 (Reuter) - Croatia has told Germany in writing that it expects to end its military operation in Serb-held areas on Tuesday, German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel said. Kinkel said in a statement that Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic had assured him in writing that the thrust which began on Monday "should be completed today (Tuesday)."
"Foreign Minister Granic assured me in writing yesterday evening and again in a telephone conversation this morning that this was a strictly limited operation which should be completed today (Tuesday)," Kinkel said in the statement.
"(Granic told me) the Croatian government did not intend to extend its action beyond ensuring that the Zagreb-Belgrade motorway remained open to the free passage of traffic," Kinkel added.
Croatia's attack began on Monday with the seizure of a section of the E-70 highway from Serbs who have occupied Croatia's region of Western Slavonia since 1991.
The attack continued on Tuesday and began to look more and more like a bid to seize back all of the region in defiance of U.N. agreements.
